Status of Selected Physicochemical Properties of Soils Under Long Term Sugarcane Cultivation Fields at Wonji-Shoa Sugar Estate

A declining trend in per hectare yield of sugarcane Wonji-Shoa Sugar Estate is being observed due to altering soil physicochemical properties resulted from long term cultivation. Cognizant this fact, a study was conducted 2017at with the objective determining effects more than 62 years cultivation on soil. In order achieve disturbed and undisturbed samples were collected 0-30 30-60 cm layers selected cultivated uncultivated light heavy soils for laboratory analysis. Results indicated that at same depth low organic matter content fields induced compaction consequently highest bulk density recorded subsoil layer land. The total porosity values out ranges recommended optimum suggest existence some degree compaction. finding further showed pH area normal range plant growth. carbon, nitrogen available phosphorus concentration under both land uses all found within range. Therefore, based result it can be concluded condition strong base availability essential nutrients are critically affected. This indicates require attention.
